North Korean hackers have long been accused of targeting financial institutions, and the content of the warning appeared to draw on material already in the public domain. The State Department said in an email that the advisory “collates government resources in one place” and provided recommended steps “to counter the North Korean cyber threat.” The North Korean mission to the United Nations in New York did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In Wednesday’s advisory, U.S. officials said North Korea’s online activities “threaten the United States and countries around the world and, in particular, pose a significant threat to the integrity and stability of the international financial system.”
