Cyberattack concept.
The United States announced the increasing lethality of cyberattacks, and that hackers aren't always interested in money. Some part of the hackers are no longer chasing for financial gain, but committing cyberattacks to harm people. US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mallorcas announced an attempt to break into the infrastructure of a water treatment plant in Florida.

And he said that it was a targeted cyberattack with the aim of murder. Cyberattacks are becoming more dangerous and malicious, according to the official, quoted by the Futurism portal citing an interview with Mallorcas for USA Today.

In support of his words, Mallorcas spoke about two related events: a simultaneous gas cut on the East Coast due to a hacked computer infrastructure of a gas distribution system, and an attempt to poison water at a water treatment plant in Oldsmare, Florida. In the second case, the hacker acted really subtly and with the direct intention of taking human lives: he tried to increase the amount of sodium hydroxide - alkali - by 100 times. Undiluted in high concentrations, this chemical is deadly. .

According to Mallorcas, the first attack was a distraction, i.e. the hackers acted smoothly and according to the script. From which country the attackers acted, the official did not specify. “The attempt to break into this wastewater treatment plant demonstrated the serious risk that malicious cyber activity poses to public health and safety. Attacks are becoming more frequent and more serious, and cybersecurity should be a priority for all of us, ”said Mallorcas.

The words of the American security official echo the position of the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Yuri Kokov, who called on the world community to move from discussions about cybersecurity to the adoption of specific decisions and conventions.
