Namibian students face trouble returning home.
Over 200 Namibian students are feared to be stranded in Ukraine's war zone, according to the source within the foreign mission, it reported that Namibian citizens are facing trouble returning home as the security situation deteriorates in Ukraine.

Currently, there is no fly-in or fly-out allowed; following the suspension of all commercial flights over the Ukrainian airspace due to the security development in that country. The students are finding extremely it difficult to escape from conflicts and growing hostile environments. Therefore they are seeking help from the Namibian government for evacuation or any form of assistance in this regard.

The source, that doesn't want to be mentioned has contacted the Namibian embassy in Moscow, inquiring whether the foreign mission knows about the situation facing students. The embassy responded that they have no direct connection with the students on the ground unless the Namibian embassy in Berlin, Germany is the one in the right position to answer such inquiries and possibly can provide advisory assistance to them.

The embassy in Germany was contacted and has replied that Namibians in Ukraine have been informed through various channels to be on alert but have no capacity to provide humanitarian support to those students. One student said people are struggling with visas, permits, and other issues which are currently very difficult to attain while the conflict is unfolding in the whole country, especially in the city where they are. Most issues faced by many students include student permit expiry and some they haven't received their Temporary Resident (TR) cards, and other traveling documents that will allow them to travel and easily return if they can go back home.

Maria Newawa, the Namibian Student Representative in Ukraine, has circulated some audio records informing fellow Namibian colleagues in Ukraine, who can afford the bus or train to leave the country to Poland on Friday (24 Feb at 09:00 GMT) so that they will be accommodated there temporary at a certain booked hotel, but they will use their own resources and money to support themselves while living in Poland.

Another student studying General Medicine at Vinnytsia medical university in Ukraine, described the situation as a bit calm but completely surprising since there is no clear direction for what is next, she also found it difficult to fly to Namibia as others stated that they haven't yet updated their Temporary Resident (TR) cards.

The Embassy Has Failed To Warm Students

On 12 January 2022, Intel has warned Namibian authorities to alert all Namibians including students that are studying in Ukraine to prepare for the worst that is coming. On 10 February some students have sent an evacuation plea to the Namibian embassy after flights were formally halted as the Russian force began a military building next to Ukrainian borders.

The warning signals were not been taken seriously! Now, Namibian students are on their own on the foreign soil, stuck between the cross-fire or so to say stand between the 'sword and shield.' Now, students have taken other ordeals to move to Poland with no visa preparation, hitting the most dangerous route of Polish–Ukrainian borders, where some Russian bombs reported landed. This is the only option they can choose on their own to escape from the glaring conflicts!

There is seems a sign of confusion both among our diplomatic mission and students in Ukraine, completely there was no statement released from the Ministry of International Relations in regards to providing a warning concerning the waring situation in Kyiv beforehand about whether or not they should stay back in Kyiv.

Nobody seems to dare or care in proving support to the students in this time of difficulty and conflict. Some universities have released advisory statements issued from 23 February, heeding all people including foreign nationals, particularly students whose stay on campuses to avoid all non-essential movements within Ukraine. The State of Emergency has been declared on 23 February that imposed restrictions on movement, blocked gathering, and introduced curfews and other measures. Every day students woke up to the sound of Air raid sirens in the mid of the night to run for the cover in the school basement.

Namibian students stranded there feel that the Affairs Ministry and Namibian government could do more in ensuring their timely evacuation and safety. The source further encouraged Namibian citizens in Ukraine to keep in constant contact with their families back at home in order to update them about the current status of their presence in Ukraine to enable both the parents and government to reach out to them when needed.

Russia-Ukraine Crisis

Tensions have gripped Kyiv as Moscow officially launched a military special operation in Ukrainian with the purpose of demilitarising and denazification Ukraine's regime. Denazification means that Ukraine should be liberated from traitors. Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier that in response to a request by the heads of the Donbass republics, he had made a decision to carry out a special military operation in order to protect the people who had been suffering from abuse and genocide by the Kyiv regime.

Russia’s Defense Ministry reported later on Thursday that Russian troops were not delivering strikes against Ukrainian cities. It emphasized that the Ukrainian military infrastructure was being destroyed by precision weapons. Civilians are not threatened, it assured.
