Namibia's health workers prepare for another COVID-19 wave / WHO.

As the whole world revied from the COVID-19 pandemic, Namibia finds itself facing a resurgence of the virus, particularly in the town of Rehoboth is grappling with an alarming rate of infections. The recent spike in cases, notably within educational institutions, has raised concerns among health authorities and the local community alike. 

Dr. Lemmer High School, nestled in the heart of Rehoboth within the Hardap region, has become a focal point of this resurgence. Since 8th February 2024, the school has reported a total of 20 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 9 active cases still under monitoring. The first case emerged when a grade 11 learner tested positive for the virus, marking the beginning of a concerning trend in the country.

Simultaneously, a teacher from St. Joseph's Primary School also tested positive on the same day, indicating a potential spread beyond the high school premises. This alarming development prompted swift action from health authorities and educational institutions to mitigate further transmission.

Dr. D. Plat, the acting director of health in the Hardap region, emphasized the concentrated nature of the cases at Dr. Lemmer High School. In a letter addressed to the regional director of education in Hardap dated 16th February 2024, Dr. Plat outlined the current situation and the measures being undertaken to contain the outbreak.

"The cases are concentrated mainly at Dr. Lemmer High School with 20 confirmed cases. Since 8th February, 11 individuals have recovered, and 9 cases remain active," stated Dr. Plat, underscoring the ongoing efforts to manage the situation effectively.

The Minister of Health and Social Services has corroborated these reports, highlighting the importance of collaborative action to curb the spread of the virus. Despite the concerning rise in cases, health authorities urge the public not to panic. Instead, they emphasize the importance of adhering to established health guidelines and protocols to minimize the risk of further transmission.

Medical experts and epidemiologists have been deployed to conduct rigorous surveillance and contact tracing, identifying potential hotspots and implementing targeted interventions. Enhanced testing and vaccination campaigns are also being rolled out to bolster immunity within the community and prevent future outbreaks.
