Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI speaks at AI for Good Global Summit.
Attending the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva last week was a transformative experience for me. The event, hosted from May 30-31 by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and co-convened with the government of Switzerland, is the leading action-oriented United Nations platform promoting AI to advance health, climate, gender equality, inclusive prosperity, sustainable infrastructure, and other global development priorities.

Following the invitation to this prestigious event, I aim to contribute to the broader machine learning to make AI a force for good, ensuring that its development and deployment are inclusive, transparent, and accountable. The event brought together brilliant minds and AI enthusiasts from around the world, and I left feeling incredibly inspired and energized to push forward on my idled AI project that I've been coding for a long time: developing an Artificial Intelligence Voice Assistant.

The summit's focus on leveraging AI to meet the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was particularly motivating. From eradicating poverty and hunger to promoting clean energy and climate action, the potential for AI to drive meaningful change was evident. The conference featured a variety of intriguing robots (including one that dispenses wine!), but the real highlight for me was the diverse range of speakers. Thought leaders from Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa, such as Pelonomi Moiloa, CEO of Lelapa AI, showcased how AI can be tailored to address local needs, like building AI for African languages.

One of the most valuable takeaways from the conference was understanding both the potential and the pitfalls of AI. Sage Lenier, a climate activist, emphasized the need to ensure AI doesn’t accelerate environmental destruction. Tristan Harris, cofounder of the Center for Humane Technology, provided a compelling critique of the tech sector’s financial incentives and their impact on societal well-being. Mia Shah-Dand, founder of Women in AI Ethics, reminded us of the deeply ingrained gender biases within tech that still need to be addressed.

While the summit’s theme was about using AI for “good,” there were calls for greater transparency, accountability, and inclusion in AI development and deployment. For instance, generating a single image with generative AI can consume as much energy as charging a smartphone, highlighting the need for more sustainable tech practices to meet climate goals. Additionally, it was unsettling to discuss AI’s role in reducing inequalities when the systems themselves often rely on underpaid content moderators in the Global South to manage harmful content.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, was the star speaker at the summit. His interview with Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic, focused on the broad potential benefits of AI, such as increased productivity in various industries. However, the discussion lacked depth on the concrete steps OpenAI is taking to ensure the safety and ethical deployment of their technologies. This was particularly poignant following revelations from Helen Toner, a former OpenAI board member, about discrepancies in how safety processes were communicated to the board.

Despite these challenges, the summit reinforced my belief in the transformative power of AI. I'm more committed than ever to developing an AI Voice Assistant that not only enhances productivity but also aligns with ethical standards and sustainability goals. The journey ahead is complex, but the insights and inspiration from the AI for Good Global Summit have given me the confidence and drive to make this long-planned project a reality.

The path to a more equitable and sustainable future is long, but with continued collaboration and innovation, I believe we can harness the power of AI to make meaningful progress towards the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
